John Frederick Beckmann is a printmaker, illustrator, publisher, scientist, and founder of Stampede Press. He grew up in Faribault, Minnesota and later attended college at the University of Minnesota where he graduated (honors; Summa Cum Laude 2009) with dual bachelor’s degrees in Physiology and Art. Currently, John is a Ph.D. candidate in Entomology at the University of Minnesota and will defend his dissertation in the spring of 2014. His research focuses on the molecular interactions between mosquitoes and an obligate intracellular organism, Wolbachia, which itself lives in the testes and ovaries of the mosquito and has potential applications to arthropod borne disease control. John’s artwork focuses on fantastical monsters, swords, and sorcery infused with subtle biblical references and faith fueled zealotry. John’s artistic style is heavily inspired by Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein the younger, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, George Grosz, and Alfred Kubin. Specifically the Der Krieg prints by Dix and the Portraits of Death prints by Holbein have worked their way into John’s published works. John lives in North Minneapolis with his wife, Shawna; daughters, Jane and Elaine; and Newfoundland, Helga.
